What is Pilates ?

It is a series of exercises developed by Joseph Pilates. The exercises target the deep abdominal and spine muscles in order to provide core strength, without adding bulk. Most of the exercises are performed lying on your back, side or front. Some of the exercises are done seated or on all fours.

What results can I expect from Pilates exercises?

Regular practice of Pilates exercises can result in improved posture and increased abdominal tone. You may stand taller and your lower abdominal area may appear more flat. You may also experience increased comfort in the movements of your spine. Pilates exercise will develop strength, flexibility, co-ordination and balance.

As Joseph Pilates said 'In 10 sessions you will feel a difference, in 20 sessions you will see a difference and in 30 sessions you will have a new body'.

How can I tell if Pilates exercises are right for me?

Despite their popularity Pilates exercises are not for everybody. If you have a condition or injury for which you have been consulting a doctor or health professional, please ask their advice before starting on a course of Pilates exercise.

Are there different levels of classes for beginners and for those with more experience?

Many classes are multi-level, with experienced participants exercising alongside beginners. Pilateswithlindsay mixed ability classes are all suitable for beginners up to intermediate.

What should I wear?

Wear comfortable exercise clothes. Pilates exercises are practised in bare feet or socks. Avoid dangling jewellery for comfort and safety. Closer fitting clothes will enable your instructor to see your movements better and give you more specific feedback and direction. Above all you should feel comfortable.

Do I need to bring anything?

All equipment is provided. You may want to bring a small cushion or towel for your head and a small bottle of water.

Should I eat or drink before a class?

Try not eat for an hour before a class so that you can be comfortable while performing sustained abdominal contractions. Drink water freely up until an hour before the class, but then have only a few sips until it starts. You may want to bring a small bottle of water with you to sip during the class.
